Metal Drum Art

The raw material is an oil drum. First the ends are removed and used for smaller sculptures. The drum is then stuffed with straw and lit to burn off residue. After it cools down, it is flattened into a 4' × 6' metal canvas on which designs are drawn in chalk. The artist then proceeds to use a hammer and chisel to cut the steel. Referred to as Haitian Cut-out Metal Sculpture, Oil Drum Art, Metal Drum Art and Iron Art, it is an internationally recognized form of sculpture that originated in Haiti.
