The gallery has served as home away from home for Haitian artists, while exposing Angelenos to the rich art of Haiti.

About Haitian Art

Among contemporary Haitian artists one can define certain informal "schools" to which a given artist may belong, such as Artibonite, Cap-Haïtien, Jungle, Vodou, Christian, Saint Soleil, Impressionist, and others. More often than not, a single artist may produce work that falls into more than one of these loose categorizations.

So while there is no "typical" style of contemporary Haitian art, it is often easy to recognize through various recurring characteristics one may find in the work of many Haitian artists: use of bright, vibrant colors; complex yet orderly composition; depictions of lush, tropical landscapes where nature practically leaps out of the canvas; or a deep current of symbolic, often ritualized, mysticism that combines elements of Vodou, Christianity, and ancient African religious traditions.

But if there is one similarity that virtually all contemporary Haitian artists share, it is that their work shines with an exquisite beauty — an increasingly rare commodity in this world.
