About the Artist

Like so many other distinguished Haitian artists, Fritzner Chery did not start out as a full-time painter. He was born in Cap-Haïtien in 1928 and worked a "regular" job as a barber when he began painting. Later, after he opened a gas station, he began exhibiting his paintings there. With the growing popularity of his work, he moved to Port-au-Prince, and for several years was associated with the famed Galerie Issa.

His work has been exhibited in Paris, Berlin, New York, London, and elsewhere, and it has been reproduced in magazines such as Vogue and Time. He has painted both historical events and day-to-day scenes, and his style of painting is characterized by the use of vibrant colors and great humor.
